Easter at Church of the Advent was bright and joyful and beautifully noisy. Many people rang silver bells, given to them when they became Advent members, or jangled their keys and cheered at every Alleluia. We made noise and celebrated and the band played the mandolin and accordion, the drums and guitar and a shaker. We celebrated together that Christ is risen.
I remembered these lines of the Christmas song, The Bells of St. Mary's:
The bells of St. Mary's, ah hear! They are calling
The love bells shall ring out, ring out for you and me.
How wonderful to realize that as we rang those silver Advent bells to celebrate Easter — the bells were really ringing out for us, for you and me, for our eternity secured in Christ's death and resurrection.
In the words of John Donne, Do not ask for whom the bell tolls — it tolls for thee.
I think I'll always remember the sound of the bells and the sparkling stained glass windows on this golden hour of Easter day.
